Stiamo parlando di Pontevedra, un ridente comune di 83.000 abitanti in Galizia, Spagna, a una manciata di km dal confine col Portogallo. Qui, da oltre 15 anni, è in atto un processo di “liberazione dalle auto“.
La “rivoluzione verde” di Pontevedra
A guidare questa “rivoluzione verde” è il suo sindaco: il medico Miguel Anxo Fernandez Lores che, eletto nel 1999, ha sin da subito letteralmente dichiarato guerra oltre 27mila auto che attraversavano ogni giorno la piazza centrale della cittadina spagnola.
Una “guerra”, però, fatta con criterio ed intelligenza: la circolazione delle auto, infatti, è ammessa solo in una zona molto ristretta e nel rispetto di severi limiti di velocità compresi tra i 20 e i 30 km/h, e l’unico parcheggio disponibile, situato nella periferia ad appena dieci minuti di cammino dal centro storico, è completamente gratuito.
Ma non è tutto.
Per i suoi concittadini e per i turisti, il sindaco ambientalista ha messo a disposizione due strumenti tecnologici: Metrominuto, un’app scaricabile su smartphone che consente di calcolare il tempo necessario per raggiungere (a piedi, ovviamente) i vari posti della città, e Pasominuto, un’app che mostra 20 itinerari predefiniti della città e che indica anche il numero di passi e la quantità di calorie bruciate per percorrere le varie distanze.
Una città ecosostenibile e a misura d’uomo
I risultati? Il tessuto urbano è stato completamente riqualificato e ha comportato la scomparsa di marciapiedi, di barriere architettoniche e l’aumento di spazi verdi, il traffico nel centro si è ridotto del 90%, il 70% delle persone oggi si sposta a piedi o in bicicletta (guadagnandone in salute), l’inquinamento è calato del 65% e il numero degli incidenti è drasticamente diminuito passando dai 1.203 del 2000 ai 484 del 2014.
Politiche urbanistiche che hanno premiato il sindaco che oggi è già al suo quinto mandato.
