Storia di un mito: come è nata la Mini Austin

La Mini Cooper, data la sua compattezza, è sicuramente una delle automobili utilitarie più utilizzate negli ultimi anni. I modelli di oggi sono il frutto di una lunga ricerca ed evoluzione avvenuta nel tempo.
La nascita della Mini
Negli anni ’50, a causa della crisi di Suez, nacque l’esigenza di ideare un’automobile a basso consumo che, allo stesso tempo, fosse pratica per la vita di tutti i giorni. La BCM (British Motor Corporation) decise di lanciarsi in questo progetto e lo affidò nelle sapienti mani di Alec Issigonis, un competente ingegnere nato ad Izmir, diplomato al politecnico di Battersea. Nelle sue mani prese forma l’idea di creare un’utilitaria che unisse economicità e praticità: il prodotto finale aveva caratteristiche a dir poco uniche per l’epoca. La disposizione anteriore-trasversale del motore, con il cambio posto al di sotto di esso, e la trazione anteriore, permisero la realizzazione di un’automobile estremamente compatta, lunga solo 303 cm. Il motore era un A-Series dotato di un albero a camme laterale, con cilindrata ridotta a 848cm³, alimentato a carburatore. Nell’ideazione della autovettura vennero fatti numerosi accorgimenti, come quello di lasciare le cerniere a vista, per cercare di contenere il più possibile i costi di produzione. L’automobile prodotta venne rivenduta sotto due marchi: Austin e Morris, rispettivamente con nomi commerciali di “Austin Seven” e “Morris Mini-minor“.
Inizialmente la Mini fu criticata perché la sua compattezza determinava uno stile di guida diverso da quello canonico, definito alla “camionista” e scomodo per i viaggi lunghi. Fu solo con il passare del tempo che il pubblico ne apprezzò la tenuta di strada e la praticità.
L’evoluzione della Mini nel tempo
I primi modelli Mini subirono, successivamente, diverse modifiche per aumentarne le prestazioni. Negli anni ’60 il punto di svolta fu la realizzazione della Mini Cooper, ovvero la versione sportiva della Mini classica, ideata da John Cooper. Le modifiche principali furono l’aumento di cilindrata da 848 a 997 cm³ e l’utilizzo di freni anteriori a disco e di 2 carburatori tipo SU da 1.25. L’automobile aveva un’incredibile tenuta stradale che la portò, nel 1963, alla vincita della gara di rally di Montecarlo.
Negli anni, alla Cooper venne affiancata anche la Cooper S, una sua rivisitazione che, come la sua versione precedente, portò alla vincita di numerose gare di rally. Alla fine degli anni ’60 venne prodotta la Mini seconda serie, che apportava piccole modifiche alle versioni precedenti, come la rivisitazione degli interni e l’adozione di un lunotto ampliato e di una nuova calandra.
Con l’avvento degli anni ’70 si decise di rendere Mini un marchio unico, abolendo la doppia denominazione Austin e Morris. In questo decennio la Mini classica venne migliorata e venne introdotta una nuova Mini di lusso: il modello standard vide l’abolizione delle cerniere a vista e la modifica della tipologia di sospensioni utilizzata; Per la seconda, invece, venne ideata la “Mini Clubman” che prevedeva una rivisitazione degli interni e degli esterni e una versione station wagon denominata “Estate“.
La Clubman uscì fuori produzione negli anni ottanta e la gamma Mini venne riorganizzata. Inoltre, in questi anni vennero, ancora una volta, apportate delle modifiche alla Mini classica, che venne dotata di carreggiate allargate, freni anteriori a disco e codolini in plastica nera sulle ruote: era nata la “Mini City“.
Nel 1990 la Mini venne modificata dal Gruppo Rover. Nel tempo vennero inseriti sul mercato nuovi modelli che, con l’avvicendarsi degli anni, proposero innovazioni nel campo della sicurezza e dell’inquinamento. Nel 1997, ad esempio, la gamma venne modificata e fu la volta della Cooper Classic e della Cooper Sport-pack. Tutte queste autovetture avevano caratteristiche comuni che le differenziavano dai modelli precedenti: motore ad iniezione elettronica multipoint, barre antintrusione nelle portiere, radiatore frontale, nuovi interni e l’inserimento di cinture di sicurezza ed airbag frontali.
La Mini oggi
Attualmente la Mini è una delle automobili più diffuse. Seguendo sempre la tradizione, oggi punta al futuro e propone una vasta gamma di autovetture in grado di soddisfare le più svariate necessità. Ai modelli più tradizionali, come la Clubman e la Cabrio, sono affiancati concept più innovativi, come l’Electric che vuole essere il punto di partenza per una nuova era ecologica.
